Facilities Management in Sri Lanka

Facilities Management is a profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to ensure functionality of the working environment by integrating people, place, process and technology of the organization. It covers many fields including real estate management, financial management, operational management, innovation and change management, human resource management, etc. while building maintenance and domestic services (such as cleaning and security) are key responsibilities.
With the increasing number of buildings and infrastructure, the demand for managing these facilities have created a “niche” market for Facilities Managers. Managing non-core business services including the physical environment enables an organization to function at its most efficient and effective level. Thus, the Facilities Manager is an active leader who integrates all operations in the built environment of an organization to make it productivity. This field is extensively practiced and researched in the UK and USA, though no “profession” has existed in the past in Sri Lanka.
Therefore in order to introduce the professions to the country as well as to cater growing demand for Facilities Managers world wide. The University of Moratuwa has embarked on an honors degree of Bachelor of Science in Facilities Management (RICS accredited). The Facilities Management profession is expected to successfully established and matured as a professional discipline offering real value added improvements for Sri Lankan public and private sector organizations
